Key Concepts

  • Autonomous Vehicles:  An autonomous vehicle is capable of sensing its environment and operating without any human involvement or human passengers. 

​

  • Connected Vehicles: Connected vehicles can "talk" to traffic signals, creating safer intersections. 

​

  • Electric Vehicle Charging: Public EV charging stations innovations include bi-directional charging, minimizing strain on a community's energy loads, and wireless, mobile and ultra-fast EV charging.

Peer Smart Community Projects

 

Ann Arbor, MI: MCity (2016) - MCity Driverless Shuttle project collected data on the behavior of pedestrians, cyclists and drivers on the road in relation to the dynamic motion of the shuttles. 

​

Arlington, TX: RAPID (2021) -

Arlington launched Rideshare, Automation and Payment Integration Demonstration (RAPID) in 2021, an on-demand, autonomous vehicle rideshare service.

​

Columbus, OH: CCTN (2015) -

The Columbus Connected Transportation Network (CCTN) equips roadways, traffic signals and bus fleet with short-range communications devices. The technology helps to provide visual collision avoidance and roadway condition data.

Boulder, CO: Vehicle-to-grid EV pilot (2021) -

Vehicle-to-building (V2B) technology enables two-way electricity to pass to and from a car or building via a charging station. This supports the building's electric loads and reduces energy costs.

Focus Group Meetings
In November and December 2021, the CDTC Smart Mobility Team held three focus groups with local government officials, staff and representatives from regional transportation organizations. The discussions focused on learning about the challenges of adopting emerging technologies, managing big data, integrating new technologies into existing organizations and bureaucracies, and other real and perceived limits on implementing Smart Cities projects. View the rebroadcast of the focus group on connected, autonomous and electric vehicles below.
