Energy & Infrastructure

Smart energy infrastructure enables a grid of integrated microgrids, protecting critical infrastructure and managing consumption.

Key Concepts

  • Smart Streetlights: Public lighting fixtures that use cameras, sensors, light-sensing photocells and other technology to create efficiencies and enhance public safety.

  • Urban Analytics: Digital technology embedded in the infrastructure of a city allow real-time prediction, adaptation, energy efficiencies, ease of movement and higher quality of life.

Peer Smart Community Projects

Chicago, IL: Smart Lighting Program (2021) - Streetlights automatically dim during periods when they're not needed, water sensors have been installed along riverbanks to monitor for flooding, and sophisticated software combined with security camera footage can help determine the source of a gunshot in order to quickly apprehend criminals.

San Diego, CA: Smart Streetlights (2012) - The city's 4,000 smart streetlights are reported as the world’s largest network of IoT sensors on city streetlights.

Atlanta, GA: North Avenue Corridor (2017) - A 'living lab' for smart technology deployment. Hundreds of IoT sensors serve an array of functions and provide a connected mobility network.

Syracuse, NY: Smart Street Lighting NY (2020) - The city replaced replaced all its streetlights with SMART LED fixtures, improving lighting quality and neighborhood safety while saving energy and maintenance costs.

Coral Gables, FL: Smart City Pole (2021) - The "Ekin Spotter" provides live video and real-time analytics to the Community Intelligence Center (CIC) and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

Vaughan, Ontario, Canada: Salt Optimization with AI - Using sensors, this tool takes various factors into account; weather models, Vaughan’s micro-climates, traffic volumes, and road temperatures, moisture and conditions to inform road winter maintenance decisions.
