  • Smart Corridor: A Smart Corridor system dynamically manages traffic using tools such as variable speed limit signs and traffic signal management to reduce congestion and crashes and provide real-time information to drivers. 

​

  • Internet of Things (IoT) sensors: IoT sensors detect and respond to changes in the environment and can share data within a connected network (for example, real time traffic updates, safety messages, weather and air quality data).

Columbus, OH: Smart Columbus (2015-2020) - A collaborative innovation lab focused on emerging mobility technologies that can be used 'for the community good.'

Buffalo, NY: BNMC Main Street Smart Corridor (2020) - The city will deploy smart community sensors in streetlights in select areas to capture data for various applications.

​

Kansas City, MO: RUBICON Smart City (2017) - Kansas City, Missouri has outfitted its 2.2-mile-long streetcar line with an array of new mobility technology including free public Wi-Fi, smart streetlights, smart traffic signals, and interactive kiosks.

Pittsburgh, PA: MOVEPGH (2019) - A program/partnership that consolidates the city’s transportation options into a single application to provide a more integrated and reliable transit system. Partners include: Spin scooters, Port Authority, Healthy Ride, Scoobi, Zipcar, and Waze Carpool.

Minneapolis, MN: Highway 55 Connected Corridor (2019) - This project included vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technology, which helps vehicles “talk” to infrastructure to improve safety and efficiency of roadway users.

​

Chicago, IL: Array of Things (2016) - The Array of Things (AoT) is a modular, open-source, network of interactive sensor boxes (nodes), collecting and returning urban data in real time to citizens, scientists and policy makers.

​

Saratoga Springs, NY: Smart City (2016) - In partnership with NYSTEC Saratoga Springs created a Smart City Framework. There are five domains in the framework: better public services, connected community, education & training, environmental innovation, and intelligent infrastructure. A product of this initiative is the City of Saratoga Springs broadband infrastructure project, providing a city-wide fiber optic network.

Stafford County, VA: The Stafford Testbed (2020) - A living laboratory that tests new smart technologies and currently focuses on drone application and systems for public safety and emergency management, cyber security & training, economic development & tourism, 5G technology & broadband expansion, smoke, particulate matter and forest fire sensing, and flood sensors.

​

Boston, MA: Smart Communities/Vision Zero Pilot Agreement (2016) - Verizon provided its IoT-based Smart Communities solutions (the “Services”) for the City’s Vision Zero Boston Program, an initiative for the City of Boston to prevent traffic crashes and resulting injuries and fatalities.

​

Atlanta, CA: North Avenue Corridor (2017) - Partnering with Georgia Institute of Technology, the City of Atlanta has deployed smart technology along a 2.3 mile stretch of roadway- North Avenue. The project includes the installation of hundreds of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors along with 26 signalized intersections to serve an array of applications ranging from adaptive signal timing to the framework for Connected/ Autonomous Vehicle rollout.

Focus Group Meetings
In November and December 2021, the CDTC Smart Mobility Team held three focus groups with local government officials, staff and representatives from regional transportation organizations. The discussions focused on learning about the challenges of adopting emerging technologies, managing big data, integrating new technologies into existing organizations and bureaucracies, and other real and perceived limits on implementing Smart Cities projects.
